What do You Call It????

When my husband and I were first married, he asked me to make him some "French Toast" for breakfast. Now mind you, I did not know how to cook much less some fancy French dish! I told him I didn't know how to cook that dish but if I could find a recipe, I would try to make it. He looked at me like I was crazy! He proceeded to tell me what he was talking about and I finally realized what he wanted. He wanted EGG BREAD! Why, I never in my life heard anyone call Egg Bread "French Toast".
When I was a young girl, I always spent a lot of time with my maternal grandparents, Grandma and PawPaw Busch. Every morning for breakfast she made Egg Bread. Hers was the best. She fixed 5 pieces -- 2 pieces for PawPaw, 2 pieces for me and 1 piece for her. She ate hers plain with nothing on it. PawPaw sprinkled granulated sugar on his and poured his coffee in a saucer and drank from the saucer. Of course, being a kid, I had to have sugar on mine too -- and I still eat it that way.
Egg Bread is very easy to make. Just beat eggs in a bowl (1 egg makes 2 pieces), dip a piece of bread in the egg and pan fry (in an iron skillet of course).

This is Egg Bread sprinkled with sugar -- YUMMY FOR YOUR TUMMY!!! (and your hips too "grin")

Now here is Hubby's take on Grandma's Egg Bread.......Creamy peanut butter and syrup -- YUK! YUK! YUK!

So now the question is 'WHAT DO YOU CALL IT?"

I'm so NOT showing Todd French Toast with peanut butter - he'll be trying it as he loves peanut butter on everything (including in chilli). Looks yummy!

I always heard it called french toast, but we always put a little milk in with the beaten egg. I eat it with syrup and when my darling hubby makes it for me he puts cinnamon and vanilla in the egg/milk mixture and sprinkles the finished "toast" with powdered sugar for me. Delicious! BTW, I love ytour hubby's peanut butter and syrup combo on waffles and pancakes!

I've always known it as french toast but with a twist. I remember eating it as a kid all the time. But, here's the twist, We had a bit of butter then sugar and then applesauce. It's extra yummy! You'll have to try it! It still reminds me of my childhood.

Kathy, what is wrong with you? Girlfriend...it's fried bread. Grandma usually made it when the bread was on the slightly moldy side....LOL....that way, she didn't waste any.

Always called it french toast, sometimes with syrup and sometimes with confection sugar.

:) Hi Kathy,
I wanted to stop by and thank you for following my blog, then I got to reading about your french toast/egg bread.

Well, our family always called it french toast. I eat it like your grandmother, plain :) My dear husband and my teens eat it with syrup on it. My stepmother makes it with sugar and cinnamon on top lol! Looks like there's quite a variety of ways to eat/serve that stuff, huh?

Either way, I like it a lot and eat it more often than I should :)

I'm real happy to get to meet you Kathy and I see already I'm going to thoroughly enjoy your blog!

Have a blessed evening!
Sharon

I grew up in Nebraska and it was always French toast (made with Texas toast of course). We put sugar or maple syrup on it. A good breakfast for a winter morning...

It's French Toast to me and I also add milk to the egg before I fry it. I eat it with syrup but if I'm out of syrup I add some sugar to the milk/egg mixture before I fry it. blessings, marlene

It's French Toast and like StitchinByTheLake, we always add milk - canned milk to be exact. Probably because it 'stretched' the eggs to feed a family of six when I was growing up. You can also add cinnamon or vanilla to the mix (or both) to add a little flavor. We always had butter and syrup on it - real syrup (made with water, sugar and mapeline), not that phoney maple stuff!

Here in Canada we call it French Toast and eat it with Maple Syrup on top. I make it on weekends as a treat for the kids.

loved your story about French Toast. My son has carried on the tradition...French toast was his dad's specialty when he fixed breakfast...now my son makes it for his kids. We always used milk and a little vanilla...my son has added melted butter to his recipe...
your story also reminded me that my husband had never seen pickled eggs until he visited my mother's house...he was so curious about what those purple eggs were on the table! Now he loves them

Eggy bread or Valley's Omelette. We don't have sugar on it. We mix bits of fried bacon or onions in with the egg before we soak the bread. It's one of my favourite comfort foods.
I think I might treat myself to some tonight

We have always called it French toast. I didn't know there were so many other names for it. Here in Canada we eat it with real maple syrup. I don't know about the peanut butter though - my son would probably love that! Oh, toast! Now I'm getting hungry.

I love this topic!! I'm reading it aloud with my sister and mother here and we are laughing so hard!

It's French Toast to us! We also put milk, cinnamon, and vanilla into the egg mix. We put syrup, sometimes boysenberry flavored syrup. In restaurants, they serve it dusted with powdered sugar and warm syrup.

Kathy, don't you have an IHOP, Denny's or Village Inn where you can order breakfast? It's listed as French Toast!

Thanks for the laughs!!
Mel

By the by, we are now making French Toast for dinner, but we are going to call it Egg Bread to see if it tastes any different! ;)

Here in the mid-Atlantic (I'm a native Washingtonian) we call it French Toast. I haven't had it in years, though. Looks yummy! ;)

Me, too, it's French Toast. When I was in the 7th grade our family traveled all year (home schooled) and almost every morning, at whatever local cafe, I ordered French Toast. I like it with butter and syrup: no peanut butter.

It's always been French toast to me! And, of course, growing up in a household with one of your husband's brothers I like mine with syrup and peanut butter, too . . . just like my pancakes!

Man!! making me hungry. French Toast with powdered sugar! Been loving it for years. My mother made with the stale bread. That and bread pudding. Now that is another subject. Thanks for the memories. (Clint loves PB on it!)
